... Like no one every was!

Wanna be the very best? Catch them all? Well for the first our years of the franchise you could only be a white young man. In 2000 the company finally gave the option for young woman and girls to see themselves as a monster catching master! A few more years before they could see themselves with a different skin color... but that's another issue for another SAL. This month we celebrate all the young woman in the world who want to travel far and wide and catch them all!

Primm and proper

Primm is a fine example of a strong female character. Although she isn't the main/lead character in the group, she joins the party to rebel against an arranged marriage and to find and rescue her actual love... quite a role reversal for that time in video game story telling! Let's hear it for women being real heroes!

Samus Strikes!

Samus. One of the first females to get a lead in a video game. She didn't get captured, she wasn't shown as weak and frail, she wasn't hyper sexualize (yet *insert eye roll*), she got to be a bad @$$ from the start. Enough said.

The Triumph of Terra

Terra Branford, a powerful and iconic leading lady in the Final Fantasy series. Up until the 6th instalment of the series, the lead characters had all, of course, been male. FF6 made strides to include one of the most diverse cast of characters thus far in its history and even gave us Terra as a co-lead, with the story line mainly focused on her and her experiences and challenges. Even though she had the "damsel in distress" troupe laid upon her for most of the game, she rose to be one of the most powerful characters! So for my birthday month, I give you one of my favorite characters from one of my favorite games in one of my favorite gaming franchises, Terra Branford!

Bananas for Dixie

DK has been a part of video game history since almost the very beginning. Kidnapping damsels in distress, climbing up towers, and throwing object at the hero trying to save the poor poor poor woman... we've heard it a million times! DK took a different direction in the SNES era and played simply on DK going out to save his own stash of bananas, they even introduced a female "Kong," only she was the typical, tall, blonde, sexy, love interest, of Mr. DK himself and of course, NON PLAYABLE. DKC2, however, introduced Dixie, as a playable counterpart to Diddy, to help save the main monkey, Donkey, and eventually in DKC3 was the main character, turning the tables as the female protagonist to save not one, but two males. Go get 'em girl!

Just Peachy

We begin our PixSAL2023 journey paying tribute to one of video games' earliest female characters, Princess Peach! Although she has been in the majority of SMB video games, it is usually in the capacity of the "damsel in distress." However, she has been shown in several games, and one of the earliest female selectable character with SMB2(USA), as a strong, able bodied, intelligent, and powerful individual! So all hail the Princess of the Mushroom Kingdom and one of the first, and probably most well recognized, video game heroines, Princess Peach!

Women are POWERFUL!

For the longest time in video game history, the focus always seemed to be on male heroes having to save the poor, helpless, defenseless, weak, females… what a crock of &$^#!

WOMEN ARE STRONG! WOMEN ARE BRAVE! WOMAN ARE POWERFUL! WOMEN ARE HEROES!

Times have changed (a little bit anyway) and we are starting to see more and more strong female lead characters taking charge and being the stars of video games. For PixSAL2023 we are going to visit and celebrate some popular, and some over looked, female characters in early video game “her”story, and some of the obstacles they had to overcome.

Here is what you will need to join me on this journey to celebrate this amazing women characters
